Glucagon receptor (GCGR) belongs to the class B G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family. Like other GPCR proteins, GCGR has 7 transmembrane domains, including 3 extracellular loops and 3 intracellular loops, and its molecular weight is 62kD. GCGR is mainly found in the liver and kidneys, and in small amounts in intestinal smooth muscle, brain, adipose tissue, adrenal glands, heart, and α- and β-pancreatic cells. GCGR plays a key role in glucose metabolism and glucose homeostasis.
