| Background | Transferrin is an iron-binding glycoprotein that plays a central role in iron transport and homeostasis. It binds ferric iron (Fe³⁺) with high affinity and delivers iron to cells through interaction with transferrin receptors, particularly transferrin receptor 1 (TfR1/CD71). Following receptor-mediated endocytosis, iron is released in the acidic endosomal environment, while transferrin is recycled back to the extracellular space. Transferrin is widely used in cell culture, biochemical research, receptor-binding studies, and the development of serum-free or chemically defined media. It supports cellular proliferation by providing bioavailable iron while reducing the potential toxicity associated with free iron. Recombinant transferrin is also useful for investigating iron metabolism, transferrin receptor biology, drug-delivery systems, and diseases associated with abnormal iron regulation. This protein is suitable for cell culture supplementation, protein–protein interaction studies, functional assays, antibody development, and transferrin receptor research. |
