| Background | CD2 is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily. It is predominantly expressed on T lymphocytes, natural killer cells, and thymocytes. The extracellular region of CD2 interacts with CD58, also known as LFA-3, on antigen-presenting cells and other cell types. This interaction promotes cell-cell adhesion, stabilizes the immunological synapse, and enhances immune recognition. In addition to its adhesive function, CD2 acts as a costimulatory receptor that regulates T-cell and natural killer cell activation, proliferation, cytokine production, and cytotoxicity. CD2 is widely used as a marker of T-cell and natural killer cell lineages and is also expressed in many T-cell lymphomas and leukemias. It is an important target for immunology, hematological malignancy, transplantation, and therapeutic antibody research. |
