| Background | CD4 is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily. It is primarily expressed on helper T lymphocytes and is also found on subsets of monocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells, and other immune cells. CD4 functions as a coreceptor for the T-cell receptor by binding to major histocompatibility complex class II molecules on antigen-presenting cells. The cytoplasmic region of CD4 associates with the Src-family kinase LCK and enhances signaling required for T-cell activation, differentiation, and cytokine production. CD4 plays a central role in the development and function of helper T-cell subsets and the coordination of adaptive immune responses. It is widely used as an immune-cell marker and as a target in immunology, infectious disease, autoimmune disease, and therapeutic antibody research. |
