FRα/FOLR1 recombinant proteins and antibodies

Folate receptor α (FRα) is a member of the folate receptor (FR) family, which also has three members, namely FRβ, FRγ and FRδ. Except for FRγ, other members of the FR family are single-chain glycoproteins anchored to the cell membrane by glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI). They can bind folic acid and transport folic acid into cells through endocytosis. They are a type of folate transporter. FRɑ is encoded by the gene FOLR1, which is located on chromosome 11 and consists of 7 exons and 6 introns. Under normal circumstances, the tissue expression of FRα is limited, usually confined to the luminal (apical) surface of polarized epithelium, including proximal renal tubules, type 1 and type 2 pneumocytes in the lungs, choroid plexus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, epididymis, submandibular salivary glands, bronchial glands and trophoblast cells in the placenta, which also makes it difficult for the receptor to access folic acid.

FRα has been proven to be almost not expressed in normal cells, but widely expressed in solid tumors, such as mesothelioma (72-100%), triple-negative breast cancer (35-68%), ovarian cancer (76-89%), and non-small cell lung cancer (14-74%); and in non-malignant tissues, only the epithelial cells of the apical bronchus of the lungs have a certain proportion of expression. In tumor cells, FRα can not only act as a folate transporter, but also as a transcription factor, playing a role in the proliferation and metastasis of cancer cells.
